Rustic wedding invitations are the perfect choice for couples who want a look that is down-to-earth, romantic, and timeless. Rustic wedding invitations convey a sense of warmth and comfort, making them suitable for all types of weddings, from beachside ceremonies to rustic barn weddings.

We have lots of inspiration for you.

Venues for a Rustic Wedding?

Rustic weddings are becoming increasingly popular due to their charm and warmth. Couples looking for a rustic wedding venue have many options, depending on their style and budget. Popular venues for rustic weddings include barns, farms, orchards, woodlands, beaches, mountainside lodges, and country parks.

A tipi is an excellent choice for a rustic wedding. Whether it’s situated in an open field, alongside a tranquil lake or nestled within a wooded area, the canvas structure provides the perfect backdrop for a rustic and romantic ceremony. When decorating your tipi wedding, you can draw inspiration from nature and use rustic elements such as hay bales, wildflowers, and twinkling fairy lights for a stunning effect.

Rustic Wedding Invitation Ideas

The rustic theme can be carried over to your wedding invitations and wedding stationery. A simple, uncluttered design with natural touches is a lovely way to set the tone for a rustic wedding. Consider using woodgrain textures, lace or burlap and hessian ribbon, natural materials like string, twine and cotton papers or brown kraft card.

Often the style of invitations features natural elements such as wood, floral designs, and earthy colours. Incorporating a hand-drawn sketch or watercolour painting of the venue can be a great way to personalise your wedding stationery. You can also include your favourite flowers, wildflowers and even feathers.

Designing Rustic Wedding Invitations

When designing your rustic wedding invitations, the possibilities are endless! Couples will want to consider their wedding venue when selecting a design. Whether you’re getting married in a rustic barn, tipi or having a beachside ceremony, draw inspiration from your surroundings and choose stationery that reflects the natural beauty of the setting. Farm wedding invitations featuring tractors and hay bales are perfect for country weddings, while beach wedding invites featuring a seascape or starfish will be ideal for couples tying the knot near the ocean. Barn wedding invitations can feature rustic elements such as trees, twinkling lights and florals; there really is so much choice.

When creating a wedding invitation suite, consider adding touches of texture and colour to your designs. You can choose from different types of paper, such as uncoated cardstock or handmade papers with natural fibres, as well as recycled paper, such as kraft card. Incorporating rustic elements like twine, burlap and hessian ribbon can add a charming touch to your stationery suite.

Couples should always think about their own personal style when designing their wedding invitations. Whether you opt for wedding invitations with a rustic theme or elegant, vintage-inspired design or something with a more modern edge, make sure to keep it consistent throughout. And remember to keep your colour palette limited, so it works cohesively across your suite.

The art of wax seals has existed for centuries. We have a beautiful selection of sealing wax and stamps that can be used for wedding invitations and lots of inspiration to inspire you.

What is a Wax Seal Used For?

Wax seals are used today for sealing wedding invitations, letters and important documents. They provide a unique and elegant way to deliver important letters and legal documents. They add an extra layer of security as when the recipient breaks the seal; they know they’re the first and only one to have opened the letter by breaking the seal.

Why Did People Stop Using Wax Seals?

Wax seals lost their appeal because the newly invented adhesive stamp meant that there was a faster, more efficient way to seal documents. Wax seals also require specific tools and can be labour-intensive and time-consuming. Since they’re are not so relevant today, they have become more of an aesthetic choice or a way to add personal style to correspondence. However, wax seals may still be used for legal or official documents due to their traditional association with trustworthiness.

Nowadays, seals are most often used as decorative items for stationery, invitations, correspondence and decorating gifts.

Types and Categories of Sealing Wax

There are many different types of sealing wax that can be used for wedding invitations and envelope seals. Some of the most popular types of sealing wax include beeswax, carnauba wax, and resin-based waxes. You can use normal candle wax but you may find it difficult to get a good seal, and it tends not to stick to the paper well.

Traditional waxes are rolled into sticks with or without wicks. The most convenient is our glue gun sealing wax which can quickly and easily be melted with a glue gun. Traditional sticks with wicks sometimes create soot which can drop into the wax and it’s not so efficient to make lots in one go.

Can You Use any Type Of Wax for Wax Seals?

While it is possible to use normal candle wax, it’s not easy for it to work correctly and get a good seal, also the wax may not so easily stick to your paper or cards. It is best to use sealing wax specifically designed for the process, such as beeswax, carnauba wax or resin-based waxes.

You can make wax seals directly on the envelope or paper or make them on silicone or a baking sheet, let them cool and use them later. By attaching an adhesive disc to the back, you can make your own self adhesive wax seals.

The main benefit of using a silicone sheet is that non-perfect ones can be remelted and reused.

What Does a Black Seal Mean?

A black seal typically symbolises authority, power, and strength. It is often used to represent a person of high status or wealth. Historically, it has been used to close letters or documents representing important matters related to business or government affairs and it can also be a sign of protection for messages in times of danger.

How to Make Wax Seals

Making seals is easy with our sealing wax. All you need is a low temperature glue gun and some patience.

To get started, melt the sealing wax in your glue gun. Once it’s melted, carefully apply it to your letters, envelopes or invitations. Then, press the stamp into the wax on your paper or envelope. Hold the stamp in place for a few seconds to allow the wax to cool and set. When cooled, your seal is complete!

Making seals is a great way to add a personal touch to your wedding invitations. It’s easy to create beautiful, custom seals that will make your invitations stand out from the crowd.

Your bespoke stamp can be used repeatedly, so even after the big day, you can create beautiful personalised stationery.

Wax Seals and Production

Wax seals can have dried petals or gold and silver flakes added before the wax has cooled

When you have lots of seals to make the easiest method is to set up a production line using glue gun sealing wax and a silicone mat. You can use an ice pack to cool the stamp every one or two wax seals (make sure the stamp isn’t icy cold, as this can create unwanted icy patterns in the wax).

Cleaning your Glue Gun

Remember that you’ll aways need some clear wax (or even glue) to purge and clean your glue gun after use.

The most common items are save the dates, wedding invitations, rsvp cards, orders of service, menus, place cards or place settings, a wedding guest book, table plan and types of sign you need on the day. There's lots of wedding invitation inspiration to be found online

Inspiration

If you’re like most brides and you’ve started to think about invitations for your wedding, you’ll need to research ideas. There is no perfect way to find inspiration or ideas but searching on Pinterest is a good start. You can also find ideas for choosing your wedding invitations by searching online or through magazines. Many websites offer inspiration for invitations, so take some time to browse through them. An easy way to decide is to choose something that you love! Then, if you have one, consider choosing your wedding invitations to match your theme.

Wedding Stationery Samples

Of course, sending samples is costly, so don’t rule out those who make a small charge; it’s often refundable against your eventual order.

It’s often worth paying a small amount to check the quality and the design of the finished product. At the same time, check the supplier’s design process, their graphic design services and whether they will accommodate your preferred colours and the actual invitation designs. Checking several wedding stationers will help you see who offers the best advice and your favourite designs.

This will make them extra special and unique, and your guests will love having something special to remember your wedding by often keeping them as treasured keepsakes. Make your Wedding Invitation

Wedding Stationery Envelopes
Quality wedding envelopes make all the difference

Many suppliers will create bespoke invitations, but there’s no reason why you can’t create your own wedding invitations. So, what should you keep in mind when making wedding invitations? Here are a few tips:

1. Start with the envelopes; choose the envelope size and quality (and check the colour you like is available), as this will determine the size of the wedding invitation. Remember that your envelopes are essential and add to the whole experience of opening the invite.

2. Coordinate the wedding invitation with your other stationery items, such as rsvp cards and thank-you cards, from the outset, so you have a clear plan.

3. Make sure the font and colour are easy to read.

4. Select a high-quality card or paper stock, and make sure you do a test print to check that your printer is suitable. Always choose a paper stock that fits your theme, so for rustic invites, use kraft paper, matt appears for modern and pearlescent papers for classic.

5. Include all necessary information, such as date, time and location.

Deciding to create your wedding invitations can save on costs which is critical if you’re on a tight budget.

Wedding Invitation Wording

When wording your invites, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you must include all the essential information, such as the wedding date and time, the location of the ceremony and reception, and how to RSVP. Secondly, you want to choose wording that reflects your wedding. For example, if you’re having a formal wedding, you’ll want to use more formal language in your invitations. Thirdly, you may wish to personalise your invites by including a special message from you and your fiance.

For guidance on wording, please read our blog and make use of our free downloadable wedding invitation templates, which include some Microsoft Word templates so that you don’t need to have design software.

With gothic overtones Ultra Violet is a deep and rich choice for those who are confident and dare to be different.

A stunning wedding colour Ultra Violet works brilliantly all year round with white, ivory or black. For bold contrast it coordinates beautifully with oranges, tangerines and acid greens making it a stunning choice for a summer wedding with all the zingy foliage and gorgeous flowers available. For winter weddings choose copper, platinum and deep jewel accent colours, dried flower crowns and lots of twigs and evergreens in your wedding venue styling. ‘Cadbury Purple’, a warmer tone, has always been a fabulous choice for weddings and we know it works brilliantly but ultra violet is the first colour we believe actually embodies a state of mind and way of life.

Vellum Papers for Wedding Invitations and Design

For many years we used lighter weight vellum paper for lining our presentation boxes. These wedding invitations made a real statement and created much excitement for the forthcoming wedding day with the invitation for friends and family becoming like a gift.

These days transparent vellum is used in many more aspects of wedding stationery design. If you’re making your own wedding invitations, consider a simple invitation card made from an A5 card base topped with a vellum layer. The base card can be printed, or the vellum printed itself, for the latter use 100 gsm paper so the text below can be seen.

The two layers or types of paper can be joined with eyelets and ribbon or just wrapped in simple jute string, twine string or finished with a wax seal made with a wax seal stamp. Our wax stamp tutorials are a must for anyone wanting to make wax seals for their stationery. Final nestle your invitation in a quality C5 envelope and create a luxurious wedding invitation for your big day.

All wedding stationery types can be swathed in this gorgeous paper with vellum jackets, or vellum wraps even A7 paper sized Save the Date cards.

Vellum is perfect teamed with barely-there neutrals, ivory and white cardstock but equally beautiful when combined with other shades such as dusty blue or dusky pink card. Don’t be afraid to combine your wedding colours for your stationery and give your guests a glimpse of your big day.

Paper thickness of translucent vellum makes a big difference to your handmade wedding invitations. Use 100gsm paper if you want to ‘see-through’ it as the higher the gsm such as 230gsm, the less you will see what’s underneath.

Our 230gsm is available as A4 card which would give two A5 invitations.

Vellum Envelope Liners

Lining your envelopes with matching vellum paper is the ultimate in luxury and has the added benefit of offering some protection to your homemade wedding invitations too.

Using a thinner weight paper such as 100gsm for lining your wedding envelopes is ideal as it’s easy to cut and fold. Use our wedding envelope liner templates created to help you line your envelopes with little fuss.

If you really love the look and feel of vellum, then why not make vellum envelopes too? Again we have envelope templates to download whether you’re looking to make mini envelopes, small envelopes such as C7 or larger envelopes like 155mm square envelopes.

Vellum Belly Bands

Belly Bands are a paper (or card) strip that holds your wedding invitation suite together. They’re perfect for holding layered, stacked invitations, RSVP cards and details cards together or keeping a pocketfold invitation closed.

Vellum is an ideal paper to make an invitation belly band from, and we have lots of wedding ideas and invitation tutorials to help on our YouTube channel.

We have lots of precut vellum for wedding invitations on our website.

Printing on Clear Vellum Paper

The nature of this high-quality paper’s surface means that the ink takes a little while to dry if you use an inkjet printer and if you try to print quickly, you run the risk of the ink smudging. This is not ideal when using vellum paper for wedding invitations, so we have some handy tips to assist you:

  • Look at your printer settings and find a setting that allows a longer drying time. This is usually the specialist/photo papers settings in the print driver or dialogue box. The printer prints more slowly allowing each sheet to dry a little before the next print.
If you’re not sure how to do this print each sheet individually and allow to dry before printing the next A4 sheet.
  • Sometimes you can print on a ‘draft’ setting, the text may be paler but can be perfectly acceptable.
  • Laser toner printers print vellum beautifully as the toner is fused onto the paper
  • Whenever you’re printing always make sure you have spare stock to run some test prints
  • Foil print looks stunning try gold foil, silver foil and rose gold if you have the capacity to add foil.
  • One neat trick to try with vellum is heat embossing directly from your printer. Take advantage of the ink taking time to dry and sprinkle quickly with embossing powder and heat. You can achieve some lovely effects printing vellum in this way. View our tutorial below to see how to do this for yourself. It’s a great, cost-effective way of printing in silver on your DIY wedding invitations

Printing 'Metallic' Inks on Clear Vellum Paper

This is a neat craft hack for metallic printing when you use vellum paper. All you need to use is an inkjet printer, embossing powder and a heat embossing tool.

  • Print your design on the vellum paper.
  • Be prepared with your embossing powder to hand.
  • As soon as the sheet emerges from the printer sprinkle on the embossing powder to allow it to stick to the wet ink.
  • Shake off the excess embossing powder.
  • Heat the vellum paper evenly with a heat tool and watch the printed area magically transform before your eyes!
  • Extra tip – to avoid additional specks of ‘metallics’ wipe your paper with embossing / anti-static bag beforehand. This will help stop any specks of powder sticking where you don’t want them!

Which Glues and Adhesives to Use for Clear Vellum Paper

As a crafter, you might have many adhesives in your card making supplies or craft supplies. With a translucent paper, you need to be sure that you use the correct one to see a little of the adhesive as possible.

This isn’t such an issue if the join of a belly band is on the back of the invitation where it’s less noticeable, but if you need to attach the vellum in full view then again we have some neat little tricks to share with you:

  • Use the right adhesive; some are less noticeable when dry than others. In our tests (see the photo below) we found the best glue for sticking vellum to be ATG tape or a glue stick. While Zip Dry was effective we’ve found recent batches to be less so.
  • The tapes were the worse performers, especially ‘red tape’ which showed through the paper clearly. Gem-Tac crinkled the paper and glue dots were still visible but are easy to use.
  • Make the joins where they’re not noticed, for example, on the reverse or an edge.
  • Die-cut or slit the paper and join together, so no glue is needed

We hope that you find our information on vellum paper helpful when you make your wedding invitations. Please do send your photos to us; we love to see your creations.

Wedding favours are a great way to show your appreciation for your guests. They’re also a fun way to personalise your wedding. Here are some ideas on how to create your own wedding favours.

Guests will love homemade DIY wedding favours from the bride and groom on the wedding day. What’s more, as they can be made in advance you can enlist friends and family to help!

Here are some unique wedding favour ideas we’ve created for you to make all your own:

What are Wedding Favours?

The tradition of giving wedding favours to your guests goes back centuries. Traditionally bonbonnieres were given to guests in Italy and France; it began with expensive cubes of sugar which were a sign of wealth. Over time it turned into tiny bags of sugared almonds (or confetti), bitter and sweet to represent the ups and downs of married life.

While sugared almonds are not so popular today, the tradition of giving a wedding favour is a tradition that lives on.

There are many styles of wedding favours, and the one that suits you best will be the one that fits your wedding theme best and sits within your wedding budget.

Decide on the Style of Favours For Your Day

You can choose between two main styles of wedding favours: traditional and modern. Traditional favours are usually made up of small items such as sweets, chocolates, flowers, and other sweets. Modern favours tend to be more creative and often involve something with a special meaning to the bride and groom.

Wedding Favour Boxes

One of the most popular styles are these cute little boxes, often made to match the wedding invitations. These little boxes can be filled with a variety of treats or gifts from chocolates and sweets to little cakes.

The boxes themselves can be decorated in a variety of ways form using silk or satin ribbon labelled with cute gift tags (we used vellum for ours) and even double up as a place setting on the big day.

Remember that with a chocolate wedding favour individually wrapped chocolates are probably best and that with any chocolate there’s the risk of melting on a hot day, or worse still sticky, chocolatey fingers of little ones!

Glassine Bags

A really modern alternative to a wedding favour box is cute glassine bags and we have these in several sizes such as mini glassine bags  and also C7+ just select the size that suits your gift best. Decorated to match your wedding theme they’re contemporary, cute and these too can double as a place setting on your special day and double up as a place card.

Good Luck Lottery Ticket Favours

An on-trend favour that can be used to create a buzz on the wedding day. With scratch card wedding favours at the ready one of the bridal party holds a ‘scratch off’ to everyone’s amusement.

Equally, weddings held on lottery days can listen to the results together. They make great wedding favours for men as well as ladies. Just bear in mind how you’re going to react to winners. The odd free lucky dip and £25 wins are great for adding excitement to the day, but if someone has a big win on the day, then this might overshadow your day. If you’d like to make these wedding favours then use our mini wallets which are easy to glue together.

It goes without saying that sweets are the most popular gift in kids wedding favours!

Depending upon the ages of the children your flower girl and page boy can be given a ‘star; role on the day such as making sure pencils are sharpened, the spare paper is on hand etc. It’s another little trick to keep the children happy!

How to Assemble the Wedding Invitation

  1. Once you have all the printed elements ready, you can begin to assemble your stationery.
  2. Firstly glue the invitation matt layer to the central section of the pocketfold. Apply a suitable adhesive all the way around the edge on the reverse. We use an ATG gun, but you could use double-sided tape or a glue stick if you don’t have this available. Make sure that the panel is central and that the border is even all the way around.
  3. Next, take your wedding invitation panel and repeat the process, Apply adhesive to the back of the invitation panel, and stick down centrally onto your base layer matt. Check, once again, that you have an even border all the way around.
  4. To apply gems for decoration ( this might be by the names of the couple or on the floral element if you have one) apply a dot of glue where you’d like the crystal. If you don’t have a bottle with a nib then use a cocktail stick to apply the glue. Place the rhinestone gem on top, using a gem picker to pick up the gems. If you don’t have a gem picker, then try adding some white tac to the end of a sharp pencil as this works as well.
  5. Allow the glued gems to dry.
  6. Pop the wedding information card and RSVP card into the pocket.
  7. Fold the laser cut pocket, creasing carefully.
  8. Take the laser cut with the printed belly band and line up so that the names of the couple are centred over the front of the invitation.
  9. Holding the belly band and invitation together flip everything over so that you can see the back.
  10. Taking the bottom of the vellum strip fold this up and crease, then take the top of the vellum belly band and repeat. We have created the join of the vellum paper in the centre, but the join will be less noticeable if it’s near the fold (you will need to adjust where the names of the couple are when printing). The narrower the overlap of the vellum belly band the less noticeable it will be as well.
  11. Apply adhesive to the shortest vellum belly band tab and then stick the vellum tabs together.
  12. Your Baroque laser cut is complete it’s a lovely, luxury wedding invitation ready for you to send out to your wedding guests.

Additional Extras

  •   Choose a quality wedding envelope to match

  • Send keepsake invites to friends and family in a presentation box. If you are hand-delivering your invitations tie a matching wedding ribbon or belly band around the box.

Personalise this Design

  • Choose a different colour Baroque laser cut to make your own invitation
  • Add crystals to your vellum belly band
  • For a luxury wedding invite add a diamante embellishment to the main invitation panel
  • For a rustic wedding theme use a neutral pocketfold, combine with kraft panels and envelopes and replace the vellum belly band with kraft paper
  • Make coordinating wedding save the date cards
  • Adapt the text for an evening wedding invitation
  • For a destination wedding use the pocket to hold tickets and further travel information
  • Design your own wording for the invitation panel and incorporate a floral design

How to Assemble the Wedding Invitation

  1. Once you have all the printed elements ready, you can begin to assemble your stationery.
  2. Fold the prescored lines carefully so that you can fold the pocketfold. You can use a bone folder for this to get really nice sharp creases.
  3. One all the score lines are creased add glue to the tabs and glue these down. Make sure that the edges are neatly aligned before sticking down.
  4. To glue, the invitation panel to the central section apply a suitable adhesive all the way around the edge on the reverse. If you don’t have an ATG gun, then double-sided tape or a glue stick is a good alternative. Make sure that the panel is central, place carefully and stick down firmly making sure that the border is even all the way around.
  5. Place the enclosures into the pocket; you can include an envelope for your RSVP card or let your guests use it as a postcard. If it’s prepared with a stamp, your guests will find it easy to return.
  6. Fold the pocket so that it forms a neat square.
  7. Take the printed belly band and line up so that the names of the couple are centred over the front of the invitation.
  8. Holding the belly band and invitation together flip everything over so that you can see the back.
  9. Taking the bottom of the vellum strip to fold this up and crease, then take the top of the vellum belly band repeat. You will see that we’ve glued the join in the centre of the back on this occasion. The join will be less noticeable if you align it to the edge as we’ve shown in other tutorials.
  10. Apply adhesive to the shortest vellum belly band tab and then stick the vellum tabs together. The narrower the overlap of the vellum belly band the less noticeable the join will be.
  11. Turn the invitation over and to add gems to the belly band: Apply a dot of glue where you’d like the crystal, if you don’t have a bottle with a nib then use a cocktail stick. Place the rhinestone gem on top, using a gem picker to pick up the gems. If you don’t have a gem picker then try adding some white tac to the end of a sharp pencil, this works too!
  12. Allow the gems to dry.
  13. That’s it! A beautiful and luxury wedding invitation ready for you to send out to your wedding guests.

How to Assemble the Wedding Invitation

  1. Once you have all the printed elements ready, you can begin to assemble your stationery.
  2. Firstly glue the glitter invitation matt to the central section. Apply a suitable adhesive all the way around the edge on the reverse. We use an ATG gun, but you could use double-sided tape or a glue stick if you don’t have this available. Make sure that the glitter panel is central and that the border is even all the way around.
  3. Next, take your wedding invitation panel and repeat the process, Apply adhesive to the back of the invitation panel, as we’re glueing it to glitter card we use Zip-Dry. Apply enough adhesive to ensure it sticks well, but glue doesn’t ooze out over the sides. Stick down centrally onto your glitter panel making sure, once again, you have an even border all the way around.
  4. To apply gems to the names of the couple apply a dot of glue where you’d like the crystal, if you don’t have a bottle with a nib then use a cocktail stick. Place the rhinestone gem on top, using a gem picker to pick up the gems. If you don’t have a gem picker then try adding some white tac to the end of a sharp pencil, this works too!
  5. Allow the gems and the Zip Dry paper glue to dry.
  6. Pop the wedding information card and RSVP card into the pocket.
  7. Fold the laser cut pocket, creasing carefully. Take your silk ribbon and wrap around the complete invitation and tie carefully into a knot. Tweak the knot until you’re happy with how it looks and trim the ribbon ends.
  8. Your Baroque laser cut is complete it’s a lovely, luxury wedding invitation ready for you to send out to your wedding guests.
