Craft Supplies for Wedding Stationer Mandy

Wedding stationer Mandy runs Elegant Creations by Mandy in Walsall – here’s Mandy’s story and how she started looking for craft supplies;

wowvow: Tell us a little about the journey you made to launching your business.

Mandy: Back in 2009 while I was a very senior manager in the banking sector, I ordered a card making kit from QVC presented by Dawn Bibby. I just thought it looked like something I would enjoy. The day it arrived I got everything out of the box all over my dining room table and started assembling the different elements into what must have looked like something very amateurish. When my hubby came home that evening I showed him what I had made and he didn’t believe that I had made the cards but I assured him that I had. I enjoyed making them so much that I already had the crafting bug.

Immediately I started making cards for birthdays, anniversaries etc and I used to watch Create and Craft whenever I could to pick up tips and ideas. Soon friends and family started ordering special cards from me and it well and truly became my passion. In 2010 one of my friends asked if I could make her wedding invitations for her. I just laughed and said I honestly can’t do that I’ve never done anything like that before. She said please just have a go and if they are rubbish I can find someone else to do them. So I made them, she loved them and I loved making them and that was the beginning. Initially, I was in partnership with my Sister and we decided to do venue styling as well as wedding stationery. Our business was a great success and we were soon so busy that I had to give up my job at the bank. My Sister retired in 2014 but I carried on and I had quite a team of ladies working with me, we all loved what we did so much.

In January 2017 my hubby was diagnosed with liver cancer and it was at that point that I made the decision to sell the venue styling side of my business to one of my staff and I would just concentrate on my wedding stationery. This enabled me to be around more for Gary during and after his operation to remove half of his liver. It was also at this time that I rebranded and changed the name of my business to Elegant Creations by Mandy.

I am absolutely passionate about what I do, I am so so busy but I love it. It also enabled me to give my friend of 53 years, Carol a job working with me 3 days a week. We are always getting into mischief together, we laugh the whole day long and we still amaze each other at some of the things that we create.

wowvow: What were some of your biggest challenges in starting your business?

Mandy: My biggest challenge without a doubt was having to get work from scratch. Starting a business with absolutely no work in your diary is hard!! Trying to get booked onto wedding fayres was harder than it seems because most of them already had a regular team of suppliers that they used. Fortunately, I did manage to get onto a fayre after about 20 failed attempts. It was at this fayre that I met a couple of suppliers who had been in the wedding business a long time and we got talking and they gave me some pointers and some contacts. It was very valuable information which put me on the right track.

wowvow: How do you differentiate yourself from other wedding suppliers?

Mandy: I am so much in love with what I do, the passion and enthusiasm just pours out of me for all to see. I also use only the best quality of card, ribbon, paper etc and I am not prepared to compromise on that quality. I offer a completely personal and bespoke service to all of my couples and whatever they want, they get, and I always throw in some extra touches for free. For example, anyone who has invitations from me gets them delivered in beautiful keepsake box which is so unexpected for them.

Also because I have been around for a while now I know many quality craft suppliers so during my conversations with my couples I always ask if there is anything else that they need that they haven’t booked yet i.e. cakes, photographers etc and I always point them in the right direction making the introductions for them. My old venue styling business is still going strong so where possible I pass my couples to Stacey and that way, because we still work closely together we can make sure all of the colours match from stationery to room décor.

I think the biggest thing of all however is that I remember above all that it is an honour to be asked to create something for the most special day in someone’s life. It is their day and I never forget that

wowvow: What else do you like to do when you’re not designing or creating?

Mandy: When I’m not designing or creating I spend time at my holiday home in Wales with my Gary. My Sister lives there so it’s a great family time whenever we go there. Its so peaceful and beautiful, it gives me inspiration to create more.

wowvow: What do you imagine you’d be doing if you didn’t have your business?

Mandy: If I didn’t have my business I would probably have gone into property development along with interior design, I have a huge interest in both.

wowvow: What is the best gift you’ve ever received?

Mandy: The best gift I have ever received without question is my husband. He is my soulmate and my whole world and I am truly blessed every day to have him. He is still fighting his liver cancer battle but we are strong together and hopefully we still have many more wonderful memories to make.

wowvow: What is your personal mantra?

Mandy: My personal mantra is ‘Live in the moment’ you can’t change yesterday, you don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow so all we truly have is right now….make the most of it!

Lots of imagery and happy customers on Facebook

wowvow: What are you reading at the moment?

Mandy: I am currently reading the set of novels by Tania Carver. They are off the scale in terms of gripping. I love psychological thrillers and no one does it better than this husband and wife team that write under the pseudonym name of Tania Carver.

wowvow: What piece of your wardrobe best represents your style?

Mandy: What reflects my personal style mostly I would say is classic elegance so I tend to wear classic pieces. In the summer mostly pretty maxi dresses with matching jewellery of course!

wowvow: What are you going to do next?

Mandy: What am I going to do next? Well I have recently stumbled across a couple of items that I would like to make as part of my wedding packages!

wowvow: Is there anything else that you’d like to tell us?

Mandy: I guess the only other thing I would like to tell you is that I realised far too late in life that I had talents that could give me the opportunity to own my own business. All the skills that I had developed during my 25 years of working in the banking sector were completely transferrable. I now have 3 businesses, obviously my wedding stationery business, my husband and I set up an Independent Financial Advisor business which has been going now for 5 years and is extremely successful and together with my friend Jane we purchased a commercial property. We have created 13 individual office spaces and we rent them out to new and small business who would otherwise struggle to pay high street prices for rent. The building has been full now for 2 years and is working brilliantly for all the businesses in there.

They all have the support from Jane who is an accountant, her daughter Rebecca who has a business providing admin support, they get financial advice from my hubby and I am always on hand to offer any help with leadership and management issues.

I hope that you have enjoyed reading about my little journey and what makes me tick.

Thank you from all of us at wowvow:

Mandy's Love for Vellum

Mandy runs Todaisy’s in Worcester – here’s Mandy’s story and how she loves the vellum paper trend;

wowvow: Tell us a little about the journey you made to launching your business.

Mandy: I’ve always loved being creative – it all started with making invitations and cards for my children’s birthday parties. I’ve found it a great way to unwind and de-stress – it’s always wonderful to give people something that you have put thought and love into. Then I found myself at a devastating and extremely stressful time in my life. My eleven-year-old son Joshua died from a brain tumour. The time in between his death and his funeral left me literally wanting to create something just for him – a final present I guess. So I spent a week, all hours, creating and producing an Order of Service especially for him – it kept me going. I made 200 which everyone has kept as a memento of Josh.

A year later, my sister sadly died, also from cancer. Again, I just went into overdrive to create something beautiful for her. After the funeral, my aunt said to me ‘you’ve got something here!’ you should go into business. It was too early for me emotionally at that time, but I still kept creating. Then in 2014, I took the plunge! Todaisy’s Wedding Stationery was born! I saw that my creations not only gave me immense pleasure in the making; my customers loved them too! My first orders were for Christening Invitations for a friend and Wedding Stationery for my niece – since then, Todaisy’s has gone from strength to strength.

wowvow: What advice would you give to any stationery designers setting up?

Mandy: One of the biggest challenges I faced in setting up is confidence, will it work? Will people love what I do? I’ve always had total belief in myself and my products – looking back at myself now, I have grown in confidence, and I believe that shines through into my customer service. My advice to others going into business is to have that self-efficacy, believe in yourself and your product, do it because you love what you do and not because of finance – that really does help your authenticity shine.

wowvow: How do you differentiate yourself from other wedding suppliers?

Mandy: Todaisy’s stationery is bespoke; therefore together with couples, we can create something that is unique for them. I offer an end to end service which takes the stress out of the stationery element for the couples wedding plans.

Opulent Wedding Invites with Glitter

Diamantes and pearls add gorgeous detail and glitter fabric adds delicate softness

Mandy: I love all of my craft tools! I think my favourite though is my glue gun (I have four now!) I think it’s because I use it to top off my creations with embellishments, including ribbons and diamantes. To sit back and look at a finished item critically is my favourite part.

wowvow: What’s your favourite wowvow product

Mandy: My favourite Wowvow product? That’s really hard. I love the embellishments. I love all the ribbons and buy all my ribbons from you because they are such a fab quality. I’m totally in love with the champagne supernova glitter card and use it a lot. Right now, I’m a little obsessed with vellum!

wowvow: Why do you like to shop with wowvow?

Mandy: I love shopping at wowvow because the products are such great quality. The website is easy to use and tells me when items are out of stock – a big must when you are running a business. I also love the speed of despatch and delivery – I’ve never been let down again, a big must for me as I cannot let down my couples. Then there’s the lovely Maoam sweet included in the package! My husband has realised this now, and hangs around while I open packages!

wowvow: What is your favourite wedding design trend at the moment?

Mandy: I’m totally in love with the laser cuts at the moment. I also love chopping them up and creating matching stationery out of them. I’m currently working on three weddings, and they are all laser cuts. I also love the vellum paper trend – it’s totally dreamy. It can add a touch of romance to such a simple design.

wowvow: Where do you take your inspiration from?

Mandy: I take my inspiration from the products – I look at them and think, how would this look if….. I’ve been known to get up at silly o’clock because I have an idea gnawing at me!

wowvow: Who is your design hero?

Mandy: My design hero is Marc Jacobs, Louboutin, and Jimmy Choo – I have a thing for gorgeous shoes!

Wedding Invites with Wax Seals

wowvow: What else do you like to do when you’re not designing or creating?

Mandy: I am extremely family orientated – I love spending time with my daughter and her family – I am blessed to have three grandchildren. My husband and I also ensure that we spend time together and we love our holidays and socialising.

wowvow: What is your proudest personal and/or professional accomplishment over the last year?

Mandy: My proudest moment is my fundraising – since losing Josh, I have held lots of events with the help of my wonderful family to raise money for Starlight children’s foundation – Josh had a wish of a lifetime granted just shortly before he died. Last year, I went all out to get closer to £1m raised so far. I raised £20k which means we are at around £980k so far.

wowvow: What do you imagine you’d be doing if you didn’t have your business?

Mandy: If I didn’t have my business, I would still be creating in some way and definitely fundraising, trying to make a difference in some way.

wowvow: What is the best gift you’ve ever received?

Mandy: The best gift I’ve ever received – I would say, my two children and three grandchildren – they are all blessings.

wowvow: What are your pet hates?

Mandy: My pet hate is procrastination – do it today! Don’t put anything off. Procrastination is the thief of time!

wowvow: What was the last photograph you took with your phone?

Mandy: The last photo on my phone is pictures of my last order – I take pictures of all my work so I can show off on social media.

wowvow: What is your personal mantra?

Mandy: My personal mantra is ‘Do it! Your track record so far for getting through anything is 100%!’

An insight into the world of Todaisy’s!

Award-winning wedding stationery.

New designs, new styles, wonderful stationery

wowvow: How does your day start?…

Mandy: My day starts with 2 cups of tea – I can only function after the 2nd!

wowvow: What are you reading at the moment?

Mandy: I’m not reading a book at the moment – I’m literally working, watching TV and then bed! I do like playing scrabble online as it connects me to my sisters and family! You will catch me reading on my next holiday though!

wowvow: What are you currently watching on TV/Netflix?

Mandy: I often have the TV/Netflix on in the background while I’m working – the last thing I watched was Dirty John and Afterlife – both brilliant!

wowvow: What piece of your wardrobe best represents your style?

Mandy: I love wearing skinny jeans teamed with pretty off the shoulder/cold shoulder tops when I’m casual, but also love dresses for meeting customers and going out.

wowvow: Tell us something we don’t already know about you?

Mandy: I’ve recently bought a Cricut maker and am playing around with vinyl to give me more versatility. I’m excited about the creations I can get up to with that! I love the challenge of playing and seeing how they turn out!

wowvow: What are you going to do next?

Mandy: What am I going to do next? This month is very busy with wedding invitations, but first I am about to pack for a short much-needed break to Barcelona with my husband. I am really looking forward to that!

A Personalised Wax Seal

Traditional wax letter seals have an elegance that’s perfect for wedding stationery, especially wedding invitations.

A personalised wax seal is as unique as the person who creates it, and it can be used as part of the wedding stationery design or as a wax envelope seal. They can transform your wedding invitations and are easy to make yourself.

You can have a personalised wax seal stamp made for you, using your initials to create a monogram, and this will make your wedding invitations truly personal. Alternatively, choose from an extensive range of our beautiful stamps specially designed for wedding invitations.

Our engraved wax seal stamps have tactile, turned wooden handles with deeply engraved brass and can be used over and over again as well as an envelope wax seal stamp. You can embellish your correspondence cards, greeting cards and letters for years to come and they make fabulous heirlooms.

Our beautiful wax stamp designs are perfect for wedding invitations, but some couples choose to design their monogram and have this engraved into their bespoke stamp.

Whichever you choose using one of our wedding wax seal stamps and our UK made flexible sealing wax you can make your wedding invitations effortlessly without the need for a wax seal kit.

Our glue gun sealing wax is available in a vast array of colours and is made in time-honoured tradition in the UK. The wax, made using a secret recipe, is more flexible than the brittle wax of years gone by so that it can withstand the rigours of the post. The colours are mixed by hand in small batches and cast in a mould, so there are often slight shade variations between the colours.

Making your own rose gold wedding invitations.
A wax seal can add the perfect finishing touch to your wedding invitation.

How to Make a Wax Seal

You can easily make a seal using a custom wax seal stamp and our gorgeous sealing wax sticks. You don’t need to waste a seal or any wax. Should you not be happy with the result you can always remelt the wax in a melting spoon over a flame and use it again just like using wax beads. However, most people love the natural authentic; aesthetic the seals create with their shape variations and little imperfections.

Our glue gun sealing wax sticks are made for use in a glue gun. We’ve tested lots of different glue guns, but if you can use one that has a dual temperature or a low-temperature setting, then these are the most effective (ideally 105 to 110° C). If the wax is too hot, it tends to bubble and its more tricky to achieve a good impression from the wax stamp. However, all you need to do is let it cool a little before making the impression, and you will achieve a good seal. Always take care when using the melted wax; it is scalding.

The benefit of using a glue gun rather than sealing wax with a wick is being able to generate clean wax for your seal as often the wick creates soot which discolours or contaminates the wax.

To make your wedding invitation seal once the glue gun is up to temperature, dispense enough melted wax to make your seal (usually around the diameter of a £1 coin for a 25mm wax seal stamp). Take your stamp and in one single, firm movement apply it into the wax. Once the wax has cooled, you can remove the stamp and admire your finished seal.

If you like a seal with an irregular edge, then you can almost ‘draw the shape’ with the wax first and fill in the centre. If you prefer a more rounded shape, then squeeze the wax into an imagined ‘centre’ creating a little pool of domed wax.

Making wedding invitation wax seals.
Our beautiful sealing wax comes in a wide variety of stunning colours.

To create a wax seal directly onto a belly band or ribbon tie the place a small piece of parchment paper or tin foil behind the ribbon, on top of the paper. This will protect the invitation and can be removed once the wax seal is made.

Traditionally the seals would be made directly onto the stationery or envelope itself. Still, if you’re making lots of seals and want to avoid dripping wax onto your wedding invitations in the wrong place, then they can be made separately. The best way to do this is on a silicone sheet or kitchen baking paper.

The brass head on the wax stamp can warm up quite quickly so to avoid this it can be cooled on an ice pack in between seals (just be aware that this can create ice like patterns within the finished seal itself, so it’s a delicate balance to avoid this). Drying your wax stamp before using helps to prevent this too.

Using a glue gun is convenient, but it can be tricky to clean afterwards. Professional wedding stationers tend to use one glue gun per wax colour to speed up the process and switch between colours easily.

You can even create your wax colour blend by mixing two colours; this is best done using a melting spoon

How to Use A Wax Seal

Once you have your wax seals, you can glue them in place onto your wedding invitations with hot melt glue or strong adhesive tape. Ready-made self-adhesive wax seals are made in the same way.

Of course, you can always add little additions into your finished seal like a flower sprig, a sprinkling of glitter or a flake of gold leaf to make them truly personal. You need to do this as you’re making the seals and before the molten wax cools.

How Many Seals Can I Make from A Sealing Wax Stick?

How many wax seals you can make depends on the size of your finished wax seal and the size of the sealing wax stick you are using. To make a 25mm diameter wax seal then our 8mm wide sticks will produce approximately five seals and our 11mm sticks will make 8-9 wax seals.

Wax Seal Colours

Red wax seals have been used traditionally in letter writing and correspondence but with a beautiful array of sealing wax to choose from it’s easy to select a colour for your wedding stationery. Gold sealing wax for gold wax seals are hugely popular as well as silver sealing wax to create silver wax seals along with rose gold wax seals and ivory wax letter seals. The best craft glue is so critical to papercraft. When making handmade cards or DIY wedding invitations, you need to choose the right craft supplies and glues for the job to avoid your precious creations falling apart.

Craft Glue for Wedding Invitations

The right craft glue when making wedding invites is crucial to ensure they arrive in one piece. Wet glues have to be selected with care as they can crinkle, warp or bend the card stock which we’re sure won’t be the look you’d like!

Double-sided tape is a cost-effective way of sticking card and paper together without the messiness of a glue stick. Double-sided sticky tape can be ‘edge to edge’ (the tape goes right up to the edge of the backing). Or ‘finger-lift tape’ where the adhesive tape doesn’t go to the edge leaving an area which makes it easier to peel off the backing.

It’s a matter of personal preference which double-sided adhesive tape you find easier to use. Both are a good strong double sided tape for using on paper and card.

When making lots of invitations, it can be a little more time-consuming as you have to cut or tear each length of tape, stick it down and then remove the backing. Many wedding stationers use an ATG gun to speed up this process, but the adhesives act similarly. You can find out more about ATG tape and how to use it here.

Both are strong craft glues so are ideal for making flat, postcard style wedding invitations, card making as well as pocket fold invitations. One word of caution is to be sure where you place your tape as once stuck down it can be tricky to remove. If you’re wondering how to remove double side tape, then it has to be carefully peeled away, but it will often leave a sticky residue or take a layer of the paper or card with it.

For lighter duty options, a glue tape roller is convenient and easy to use and is often enough for sticking lightweight papers together

Types of Craft Glue

Double-Sided Tape

Double sided tape is ideal for sticking paper and card together and is mess free!

Craft Glue for Making Pocketfolds and Wallet invitations

  • If you find that the double-sided tape isn’t working for you, then red double-sided tape is extremely strong and ideal for sticking down the tabs on pocketfold invitations securely. It’s always a good idea to test out which is the best double-sided tape for your craft project.
  • Sticky velcro dots are ideal to use as seals for your pocketfold wedding invitations. They’re easy to attach and secure the invite for your guests to open with the advantage that they’re quickly closed again. An alternative to these are ‘duo discs’ which are perfect if you want to keep your wedding invitation slim enough to be posted as a ‘letter’ rather than a ‘large letter.’
  • Glue dots on craft rolls are perfect for attaching little bows or embellishments and are a good ‘no mess’ speedy, option.
  • If you decide to make your envelopes, then envelope glue is good for the gummed section, or again they can be sealed using double sided tape or something like Pritt glue stick.

Fingerlift Double-Sided Tape

Finger lift tape has wide backing so it’s easier to peel off ideal for card making and crafts.

Super Strong Red Double Sided Tape

Super sticky tape has a distinctive red backing and strong bond so is great for card making and crafts.

Glitter Pocketfold Wedding Invitations

Our pocketfolds are available in many card stocks including glitter.

Glues For Vellum Papers

Sticking vellum can cause issues with being able to see through the paper. It’s wise to be aware of this when designing your wedding invitations. Sometimes the glue can be seen through the opaque paper, and the adhesive can yellow as it ages. If the join is on the reverse of your invitation, then it’s unlikely that people will see it, but if it’s on the front, then you do have to be careful.

Craft Adhesives for Sticking Craft Embellishments

A hot melt glue gun or mini glue gun, which uses hot glue sticks is ideal for attaching all types of ribbon bows, diamante embellishments and ribbons to handmade cards and wedding invitations. Glue guns use hot melt adhesive and are convenient as well as quick and easy to use. Glue gun sticks are readily available and are used in many arts and crafts projects.

Good alternatives are craft glue dots sometimes called ‘adhesive dots’ or Gem-Tac, which is a great multi-purpose glue.

We’d always recommend that you complete a test first to ensure that you’re happy with the results before making all of your invitations.

Velcro Coins

Velcro coins are ideal for fixings for pockets folds so that they can be opened and reopened.

Gem-Tac Multipurpose Glue

Gem-Tac is our preferred glue for sticking diamante embellishments. It does need drying time but sticks them well onto paper or card.

Craft Adhesive Foam Pads

Craft adhesive foam pads are ideal when you want to raise an embellishment or pice of card in your design.

Gluing Ribbon on Wedding Invites

One of the most popular ways of using ribbon on invitations is to trap the ribbon between two layers of card. The ribbon may or may not be gathered and an embellishment added to the middle. The easiest way to do this is to use ATG, a hot glue gun or double-sided tape, which is quick and easy. Make sure that it’s applied it to the card, not the ribbon.

If the ribbon or lace is quite thick or textured, you may need to add some Fabri-Tac to where the ribbon or lace disappears between the card to stop it pulling away.

Fabri-Tac works for most ribbons and lace and, unlike tape you can add spots of glue where appropriate so no adhesive is seen between the gaps of the lace. A glue stick also works with lace in the same way.

The video tutorial below shows how we attach lengths of ribbon between two pieces of card.

Gluing Tiny Diamante Gems and Pearls

You can purchase hot fix diamante gems, but for peace of mind that your diamantes won’t fall off we recommend Gem-Tac from Beacon Adhesives. With the nozzle on the bottle, you can place tiny dots of glue where you want the gems then simply pick them up and place them with a Gem-picker it’s easy-peasy!

Don’t fall into the trap of using super glue which causes a white bloom on the glass of the gem.

Choosing High Quality A4 Card

Understanding gsm is important when choosing A4 card a paper stock. One of the most common questions we’re asked regarding wedding stationery card stock is ‘how thick is the card’, or what’ gsm is the card’? It’s a common misconception that gsm is how thick a piece of paper feels and it’s an indication of high quality; however, this is not the case. Cereal box card feels thick, but it’s unlikely that you’d want to use this for your wedding invitations!

Papermaking is a mechanical process at a paper mill with enormous paper machines (around 100m long!)

It’s a complex process in simple terms refined pulp is added to large amounts of water, mixed and then sprayed onto a metal mesh to allow separation of the fibres and the water. It is then pressed to remove moisture and finally dried. Once dry the paper is rolled into enormous rolls on the end of the machine weighing anything between 10 – 50 tonnes, these are then slit into smaller rolls or cut into sheets.

As with most products, paper is milled to a standard within a manufacturing tolerance. These tolerances can result in variations of shade, thickness, weight and size. The most common standards for paper are ‘GSM’ and ‘MIC’.

‘GSM” is an acronym standing for ‘grams per square metre’, it’s calculated by measuring the physical weight of 1m x 1m of stock.

As it would be impractical to physically weigh a sheet of stock this size the calculation is often made from a smaller sheet. It’s more commonly written as gsm or sometimes g/m2, g/m² or g2m. The higher the GSM, the heavier the card will be the lower the GSM, the lighter the paper weight will be. For example, paper weight gsm are divided as follows:

  • 35 to 55 gsm thin paper the types of paper for newspapers
  • 70 to 80 gsm multipurpose paper, copy paper and printer paper (usually in 500 sheet reams)
  • 90 to 100 gsm high-quality office paper or printing paper
  • 120- to140 gsm heavy weight paper, light card stock, suitable for high quality envelopes
  • 150 to 240 gsm light craft card, excellent for punching out shapes, layering and die-cutting
  • 240 gsm and above good quality card stock ideal for handmade cards and business cards

Paper Thickness

‘MIC’ is an abbreviation of ‘microns’ or ‘micrometre’. This is a measure of the physical thickness of paper and is measured using a micrometer. It’s often written as mics, mi or µm.

The ‘weight’ tolerance for paper making is plus or minus 5%. If a paper is described as 285 gsm and your ‘first batch’ is terrific quality because it’s 299gsm (within tolerance) yet your’ second batch’ is disappointing because it’s actually 270gsm (still within the tolerance). Similarly, if the paper ‘mic’ standard is 0.8 µm then from making to making it could vary from 0.76 to 0.84 µm.

Not only this paper also has a ‘grain’ which is formed as the fibres align themselves in the direction of travel through the paper making machine on the wire former. Imagine a piece of balsa wood; it will fold/snap easily along the grain and not so easily against the grain, the paper will behave in precisely the same way. So folding, creasing and scoring paper along the grain (or parallel to the grain) will break fewer fibres and therefore you will have a much ‘cleaner’ fold or score.

As well as the making tolerances within manufacture the grain direction can differ from one flat A4 sheet of paper to the next. This happens as a result of maximising the ‘number out’ of the milled sheet; some A4 sheets are cut parallel to the grain, and some are cut against the grain.

Handmade papers such as mulberry and lokta papers are traditionally made by hand using rag or bark to create the pulp which is poured onto fine mesh screens. These are then laid out in the sun to dry at which point the paper can be peeled off the screen. Such handmade papers can obviously vary in all parameters especially colour and thickness and imperfections or impurities are part of their charm.

Using a digital micrometer to measure the 'mic' or thickness of the stock.
A micrometer measures the thickness

Blank Cards and Envelopes

For card making or making your own cards crafters usually use 300 gsm card blanks (or paper card ranging from 240gsm to 300 gsm card) as this makes good scored blank greeting cards. Card making supplies for Christmas card craft, birthday and personalised cards can be die-cut and can be in a pack or as single sheets.

Craft card comes in many paper thicknesses, but there’s no doubt that the thicker the paper, the higher the perceived quality.

We hope that this brief explanation of its manufacture helps us all to manage our expectations when we see those slight variations.

If you’re looking for paper crafting tips and tricks or just want to make your cards, we have some great card making hacks for you. There are so many little tips and tricks that not only help you make your DIY wedding invitations quicker, but they’ll also help the finished results look professional too!

Card Making Tips for a Professional Finish

1. Glueing Craft & Diamante Embellishments to Cards and Invites

Which is the best adhesive or glue for sticking card making embellishments to your wedding stationery? There are lots of different adhesives to choose from, and two of the most popular are Hot Melt Glue sticks and ‘Gem-Tac‘.

Hot melt glue using a glue gun is a quick, easy and convenient adhesive. You have to use it quickly and be sure that what you’re sticking is in precisely the right place and for example, not ‘off-centre’.

Hot glue sticks are great but when sticking metal embellishments check that you’ve achieved a good bond if you’re not fast enough and the glue has already cooled on a metal embellishment it might fall off.

Gem-Tac glue from Beacon Adhesives requires drying time but allows you time to find the correct position. It’s tremendous craft glue and once set is very difficult to remove so there’s no chance the embellishments will fall off your card.

2. Create Professional Looking Wedding Invitations

Have you ever wondered how professional wedding invites have that ‘gathered ribbon’ effect? A ‘gathered’ or ‘pinched’ ribbon below an embellishment is a popular style of decoration in wedding stationery. You can use it on your wedding invitations but all of the ‘on the day stationery’ including guest books.

The easiest and quickest way to create a ‘pinched’ or ‘gathered’ ribbon effect is by using a hot glue gun. You simply add a little glue beneath the ribbon and before the glue has a chance to cool ‘pinch’ the ribbon together with your fingers and then flatten it. You can add the adhesive at any time during the assembly process, whichever you find most comfortable. You can see this process and just how quick and easy it is in the video below.

A hot melt glue gun is a worthwhile investment if you’re making quite a few wedding invitations and plan to make ‘on the day’ stationery as well. Making your invitations will be faster using a glue gun, but if you don’t have access to one, then you can simply achieve the same effect using cotton. Simply tie a knot around the centre of your ribbon, and this will create the gathered ribbon effect in the same way as the glue gun. We show you how in the video below.

3. Make Sure Your Embellishments Are Not 'Off Centre'

Making sure things are central is key in how to make professional wedding invitations. The best way to achieve this is to create a template as you won’t have to judge or measure and each embellishment will be central every time. It saves so much time when making lots of invitations.

So here’s what to do:

  • Cut yourself a strip of paper just wider than the embellishment you are going to use and longer than the width of your invitation.
  • Fold the excess paper over the sides of the invitation, so the ribbon of paper fits snuggly onto the front.
  • Take the paper ribbon and fold in half (exactly and make a firm crease).
  • Place your embellishment exactly half on and half of this central crease and draw around the embellishment, make sure your drawing is slightly larger than the embellishment.
  • Cut out along your line.
  • Replace your paper ribbon over your stationery, and you will have a magical placement ‘hole’ in which to glue your embellishment.
  • Place all your embellishments for all your stationery precisely in the centre with ease!

This method really does speed up the making of wedding stationery and also can be used for other card making projects as well.

Making a Template

Making a template is easy and it will help you speed up making your wedding invitations.

Cut a Strip of Paper

Make a template for your wedding invitation.

The strip needs to be wider than your embellishment. Fold it around the edges of the invitation.

Make Sure the Paper Fits

Make sure the paper strip fits snugly onto the front of the invite.

Getting the Position

Fold your paper strip in half and then position your embellishment half on and half off the paper. Draw around it.

Cut Along Your Line

4. Keep Your Scissors Sharp

If you cut a lots of paper, card and ribbon for your card making you’ll know how important sharp scissors are!

Keep your scissors nice and sharp by cutting regular glass paper or sandpaper.

Try to use a relatively fine sheet of glass paper such as a P80, P100 or P120 ISO/FEPA Grit Designation Paper (the higher the P number the finer the grit size). The P number is normally printed on the back of the glass paper.

Fold a sheet of sandpaper in half with the sandpaper facing outwards and cut the paper with the scissors. Cut long strips along the full length of the scissor blades and repeat this about 10-12 times. Wipe the scissors to remove any grit.

Keep your scissors sharp.

5. Stop Ribbon From Fraying

One of our favourite card making tips and ideas is stopping satin ribbon from fraying. It really does spoil a handmade card (unless you’re wanting to create that effect). Nice clean cut ribbon is essential for wedding invitations with ribbon.

You can use Fray Check or if you don’t have any of this available stop the fraying by heat sealing.

6. How to Stick Card onto Glitter Card

Glitter card is popular in wedding invitation designs. A top tip for making your own wedding invitations is layering card onto glitter card. Select your glue carefully as not all glues stick to glitter.

7. Too Many Strings From Your Glue Gun Sticks?

Hot glue gun crafts are excellent for lots of DIY crafting and Christmas card making, but sometimes glue sticks for glue guns create strings which you always have to rub away.

If you keep your hot glue gun sticks in the freezer before use, you’ll find there are far fewer strings.

Learn how to tie a ribbon bow for your card-making and crafts. Whether they’re Christmas tree bows, floral bows, hair bows, bows for gift-wrapping or wedding invitation bows, they can be fun to make.

There are several ways to make ribbon bows, and the finished effect will depend on the ribbon you choose and the way the bows are made.Learn how to make a ribbon bow

How to Tie a Ribbon Bow and Types of Ribbon

Overall the best ribbon to use for bows is a double-sided satin ribbon. Some ribbons have a contrasting pattern or colour on one side, and these can look pretty as well.

Wired ribbons give structure to the bow, and the shape will hold in place, if it gets squashed, it can easily be reshaped. Alternatively, the non-wired ribbon is far less structured.

Matching narrower ribbons can be used on smaller items of stationery such as save the dates and RSVP cards. Thin ribbon, usually 3mm wide, is ideal for little bows on wedding favours.

Bows are easy to make from a piece of ribbon, and there are mainly two types for wedding invites; a ‘Dior’ Bow and a traditional bow with loops. Traditional bows can be ready-made, made by hand or made with a bow maker.
