Why a Laser Cut Wedding Invitation?

A laser cut wedding invitation is  perfect for a wedding, and it’s not hard to see why. With many laser cut designs to choose from they offer romance and luxury and can easily be personalised to suit your wedding theme.

DIY laser cut wedding invitations can be decorated simply with ribbon wraps or belly bands. More lavishly designs use satin or silk ribbons and embellishments, perfect for a luxury wedding. We have several beautiful colours to choose, including invitation cards made from matt or pearlescent card stock and our sumptuous Royale Ivory laser cut.

There are three styles of laser cut that you can choose from a wallet style, a gatefold style and a laser-cut pocketfold. The style of laser-cut you want will simply depend on your personal preference and how much information you wish to include with your wedding invitation.

Select a font style to match your style but beware of anything to intricate as the final invitation risks looking too busy.

Our lasercuts are available in a selection of pearlescent and matt card stock. Our pearlescent laser cuts form our ‘Royale’ collection, and you can choose Royale White, Royale Ivory, Royale Grey and Royale Champagne. For matt laser cuts or our ‘Chalk’ collection, we have Chalk Grey, Chalk Calico and Chalk Pink. All perfect colours for making wedding invitations.

Some laser cuts or gatefold invitations are flat-packed. To protect beautiful laser-cut or delicate panels employ the following technique for crisp creases and a flawless finish.

  • Place the invitation on a flat surface, outside-facing down, inside facing up (this means the rounded part of the crease is ‘upwards.’
  • Place a ruler (ideally metal) on top of one of the creases; the ruler will be partly covering one of the laser cut panels.
  • Hold the ruler down with one hand while folding the invite over the ruler using a finger to press into the crease.
Slide-out the ruler and press down firmly along the crease, a bone folder is ideal for this but fingers will do!
  • Repeat with the other panel
  • Your beautiful invitation will now be nicely folded and ready for an insert, and you’ve not had to touch the delicate panels once!
  • This method is a straightforward way to fold a delicate gatefold invitation, particularly those with laser cut panels.

Comparing Glue Guns and Gem-Tac

Deciding which craft glue to use is essential when making your DIY wedding invitations.

Which is the best adhesive or glue for attaching embellishments to your wedding stationery? The two most popular for this task are hot melt glue guns and Gem-Tac.

Here we compare the advantages and disadvantages of both;

Craft Glue - Hot Melt Glue

Hot melt glue from a glue gun is a quick, easy and convenient adhesive to use.

There are many types from cordless hot glue guns, mini hot glue guns and also low-temperature glue guns. Some have two heat settings, dual temperature so that you can switch between a higher or a lower temperature depending on the adhesive that you’re using.

The best hot glue guns for card making and DIY wedding stationery is a simple craft glue gun. Glue guns are perfect for quick repairs, craft projects and some DIY projects.

How To Use a Craft Hot Glue Gun

Hot glue gun sticks usually come in packs. After allowing warm-up time one or two sticks are needed in the glue gun, as you press the trigger, the glue is moved and melted appearing form the nozzle.

There’s very little mess; you have to be fast and apply the glue to the surface before it cools and then strings can be removed. You need to consider the surface you’re attaching it to, if it’s cold like a metal diamante embellishment, then the glue can cool too quickly that you don’t achieve a good bond.

Hot melt glue is quick, convenient and produces a good bond, but in our tests, the embellishment could be removed quite easily. We love hot melt glue for its convenience and its great for attaching small embellishments to cards quickly (such as paper flowers and ribbons). The significant advantage is that there’s no drying time.

Dual Temperature Craft Glue Gun

Our craft glue gun is ideal for general crafts and paper crafting.

Gem-Tac Adhesive

A multipurpose adhesive ideal for crafts & card making.

Glue Gun Sealing Wax

You can also personalise your wedding invites using wax seals using glue gun sealing wax.

Glue Gun Sealing Wax

Sealing wax for glue guns can be sent through the post, making flexible and robust wax seals. Ideal for high quality wedding stationery.

Glue gun sealing wax is best in a low-temperature glue gun, but we’ve used a craft glue gun, and this works well. If you’re creating a lot of identical wax seals at a time, this method is much less time-consuming. You can create many seals on a silicone mat and then use them later by glueing to your project.

The significant advantage of this is that you can reject any seals that you’re not happy with, the rejected wax can always be remelted and used traditionally.

Disadvantages are that changing wax colours can take 2-3 sticks of wax or glue before the new colour is clean. Some professional stationers have one glue gun for each colour.

Craft Glue - Hot Glue Gun Hacks

  • Stringy glue; keep your glue sticks for the hot glue gun in the freezer, and there’ll be far less stringiness
  • Low-temperature glue guns reduce the risk of burns
  • Clean the glue gun nozzle regularly; this is the most common reason for glue guns dripping
  • Don’t tip the nozzle upwards as the hot melt adhesive glue will drip down onto the casing
  • Protect the surface you’re working on; baking mats are ideal for this
  • How to clean your hot glue gun, make sure the nozzle is cleaned regularly by turning the glue gun off by the power switch and still squeezing glue out – this removes any melted glue
  • Hot glue gun safety tips; ideally wear heat resistant gloves and safety glasses. Keep on a heat protective surface and use a wire stand to support the glue gun. Remember to turn off when it’s not in use.
  • Should you get a hot glue gun burn then put the burn under running cold water for a few minutes and if necessary seek medical advice

Gem-Tac Glue

Gem-Tac from Beacon Adhesives
Our favourite glue for papercrafts is Gem-Tac

Gem-Tac from Beacon Adhesives is a liquid glue that can be applied directly from the bottle. It requires drying time, but you can reposition your embellishment if you feel it’s just not quite in the right place.

In our tests, we found that the embellishment stuck on with Gem-Tac was challenging to remove and that the only way to remove it was to tear the card itself. You can see how badly damaged the card stock is in our video.

Gem-Tac is a tremendous multi-purpose adhesive that dries clear. It can be used for bonding porous materials such as fabric, wood and suede to smooth surfaces such as glass, vinyl and metal. If you have a diamante embellishment to repair it’s the best adhesive for the job, other glues like superglue make the gems go cloudy or ‘foggy’.

In our opinion, it’s the best gemstone glue for card stock and also the best glue for gems on fabric. It’s a permanent adhesive that bonds gems, sequins, glitter and rhinestones to many materials, it’s ideal for attaching Swarovski crystals especially if you don’t have a heat tool or the gems are non hot fix.

Adhesives For Speedy Card Making

Double-sided tape is a card making essential, but it can be fiddly with cutting, sticking and peeling of the backing tape. Double-sided finger lift tapes are more efficient and quicker to use (these are tapes where the removable backing is wider than the tape itself, so it’s easier to peel off).

Double-sided sticky tape is good value and ideal for most card making. However, if you’re making lots of cards for Christmas or DIY wedding invitations, then other tools can speed up the process. The first we’re looking at is the Scotch ATG 700 tape gun.

If you’re looking for a strong double-sided tape for your card making, then the adhesive transfer tape gun applies lengths of ATG tape easily and precisely just where it’s needed. The ATG 700 Adhesive Applicator Gun is a no-mess, on-demand, super robust and dry glue dispensed from a light-weight ‘gun’ with trigger action. While more of an investment we believe that it’s one of the best double sided tapes for card making and that the busy wedding stationer or crafter will never look back!

The ATG gun holder contains an ATG gun refill of ATG adhesive transfer tape. The instructions for loading the refill are inside the applicator.

There are different adhesive grades, but we find the 904 transfer tape is an excellent general-purpose adhesive which has 44m length on a roll.

Practice makes perfect so follow the instructions below using scrap card or paper until you’re ready to go!

Speed up your card making with the ATG adhesive Gun. A must for professional wedding stationers.

Transfer Tape for the ATG Applicator Gun

All purpose adhesive transfer tape, ideal for sticking paper and card. Quicker than double sided tape.

The Roller Glue Applicators

The application rollers that apply the adhesive glue to your card or paper.

How To Use an ATG Glue Gun

  1. Hold the handle and depress the trigger.
  2. Place the roller onto the card where you want to begin a strip of glue.
  3. Pull the roller towards you while pressing the trigger and pressing down gently, a 12mm wide ‘strip’ of super strong glue transfers to the card or paper.
  4. Once the ‘trigger’ is released, the roller will not move so will not dispense more glue.
  5. When you’ve practised you’ll be whizzing around corners too – stop dispensing and turn the card/paper as you go!

Alternatives To The 3M ATG Gun

An alternative tape glider is the Fantastak SuperRoller it’s ideal when making your DIY wedding stationery or if you run a wedding stationery business. It’s much lighter than the ATG gun at only 99 grams, yet it holds up to 75 metres of double-sided adhesive tape.

It’s easy to refill as it uses a refill cartridge so unlike the ATG gun you don’t have to load or thread the adhesive tape.

The SuperRoller has several grades or types of adhesive tape, and because it’s a cartridge, it’s easy to switch between them. There’s a removable adhesive, permanent (ideal for most paper and card) and permanent plus (good for harder to stick card stocks).

It’s ideal for those who do lots of card making and papercraft as you can work quickly and efficiently.

Double Sided Tape

For small jobs and where cost or budget is the primary concern simple double sided or Fingerlift tape is ideal.

Since the backing tape on Fingerlift tape is wider than the tape itself this is the quickest and easiest tape to use in arts and crafts and general card making.

Adhesives For Speedy Card Making Double-sided tape is a card making essential, but it can be fiddly with cutting, sticking and peeling of the backing tape. Wedding Guests Books - A Special Keepsake

Wedding guest books allow your guests to sign their names and share their memories of your wedding day and to wish you both well for the future.
It’s not always possible for the happy couple or bride and groom to speak at length with wedding guests so it’s lovely for them to be able to read their guest book and see their guests’ messages of good will, congratulations on your wedding, amusing comments and great advice at a later date.

Make Your Own Wedding Guest Book

A stylish and contemporary guest book from East of India.. This could also be used as a planning notebook.

Guest Books for A Rustic Wedding

Pass on your love, wise words and congratulations to the happy couple on the big day, a lovely keepsake.

Calligraphy Guest Book

A pretty guest book ideal for many celebrations such as weddings and Christenings

A Wedding Guest Book Guide

Traditional guest book takes the form of a hard-backed book with blank pages made from quality paper. A wedding guest book pen is supplied and the book is passed round, often after the wedding breakfast, for guests to write their messages in it. Alternatively a table is placed in an accessible area with the book positioned on it. A notice will invite guests to leave their messages and kind words for the happy couple. The book would usually have ‘Guest Book’ simply printed on the cover or on the box.

Theme Your Guest Book

If you have a specific wedding theme you may wish to coordinate your wedding guest book and decorate it, or have it decorated accordingly. Some books available online will already suit your theme but, if not, consider making your own book for your guests or consider an alternative wedding guest book idea. There are a lot of plain guest books available that are perfect for making DIY and personalised guest books. If they are boxed within a quality box then it’s a nice idea to decorate the box as well. The box and lid can be left beside the book so, when the book is open and the front cover concealed, the decorated, and possibly personalised lid, will be visible.

Personalise Your Guest Book

If you want to personalise a guest book you can print the details you want to include onto coordinating card. This topper is then attached to the cover of the book and further decorated if wished.

The details to include for personalised wedding guest book or engagement guest book are the words ‘Guest Book’, the date of the celebration and the names of the happy, newly wedded or engaged couple. For other celebrations the same applies but swap the couple’s names for the name of the event being staged.

Pick a pretty script font for the names and a capitalised font for the other details and, perhaps mount the topper onto another slightly larger piece of card to give an attractive, layered effect. The base card could pick out the chosen wedding colour theme or be a decorative card or paper with texture or pattern. Pebble paper, Mirri card or decorative, lustre card, sparkle card or glitter card is a lovely idea for the bottom layer.

Heirloom Guest Books

If you decorate the box it’s lovely to make an heirloom guest book with clusters of embellishments; perfect for a vintage themed wedding and a thoughtful and beautiful keepsake.

You will make a truly unique book and you can use little embellishments that are special to you. A treasured gem from a broken necklace, a special button or little charm. Every wedding detail is memorable but this would be such a personal gift for the happy couple as so much love goes into it.

Research antique Victorian picture frames and you’ll see the interesting frame shapes and clusters of decorative detail that can be recreated in the positioning of delicate embellishments, cameos and pretty bows. Transform the guest book into a stunning keepsake with script or calligraphy fonts, used for the text, and beautiful decoration and embellishments that are new or pre-loved.

Unusual Guest Books Ideas

There are some very unique wedding guest book ideas and wedding guest book alternatives to choose from! A wedding drop box provides little wooden hearts upon which guests sign their names or write short messages. The hearts are then dropped, one by one into a decorative frame that gradually fills up and can be displayed afterwards.

It can be difficult, on the spot to know what to write in a wedding guest book so a fingerprint tree is also a lovely, interactive idea. Guests press a finger into one of several ink pad colours and add their fingerprint, like a leaf, to the pre-printed tree. They then sign their name over their individual print and the framed picture can be displayed in the couple’s home afterwards.

Magic flyer butterflies are wonderful for drawing attention to a guest book by opening it with paper butterflies flying out.

Have I Got To Have a Guest Book?

No not if you really don’y want one but, after the big day it’s lovely to have a visual reminder of a special occasion or wedding.
Guest books don’t tend to get displayed but, when you want to, you can bring them out, like photograph albums, and you’ll re-live your special day once again through all the lovely messages and signatures of your friends and relatives.

When you sadly have to cancel your wedding due to unforeseen circumstances.

Whether you’ve been planning your wedding for a matter of weeks or for a long time, having to cancel or postpone for any reason is heartbreaking as well as stressful. When those reasons are beyond your control it can be even more disappointing and our hearts go out to you. You have poured your heart and soul into your wedding planning, set the wedding date, made all the travel arrangements, organised your wedding suppliers, booked a wedding venue, bought your wedding dress or suit, formally announced the wedding day with your invitation after agonising over your guest list and, in many cases, created a wedding website.

A marriage is a joyous celebration, one all your loved ones, friends and family look forward to so it can feel incredibly daunting postponing a wedding. With the global outbreak of Coronavirus, it’s a prospect many couples are currently facing. In this case, the decision to postpone or cancel may be out of your hands, for example, public gatherings are restricted, there are a host of travel restrictions and if these don’t apply there may be other reasons such as self-isolation and the risk of exposing guests to the infection. It’s a huge decision fraught with emotion.

At the time of writing the Church of England have announced that during the Coronavirus outbreak weddings should be limited to a maximum of five people, including the Bride and Groom. Many couples are opting to continue with the day and are looking for ways of including their guests such as live streaming through social media. It certainly would be a memorable day finding innovative ways to involve the guests with WhatsApp groups, dedicated Instagram accounts, Youtube videos and even take-outs for all the guests.

Whatever you decide to do as a couple, it’s important to realise that it isn’t your fault and you need to gather the support of those around you and your wedding suppliers. If you decide to postpone all the effort you have put into organising your big day can still be realised, just at a later date. If you opt for a smaller ceremony then you can still have one of the best days of your life, as you will be marrying the person you love.

Postponing your special day can be done with the help of your suppliers and if you’re really finding it too stressful. try not to panic, you can use an appointed representative. This could be a family member or a member of the wedding party, such as a Bridesmaid, who can manage the decisions without the Bride and Groom having to get too involved in the nitty-gritty of the admin. Choose someone who is well organised, thoughtful and supportive. They can shield you from all the phone calls, manage your wedding gifts and questions from the guests.

If you decide to cancel completely then the support and love of your friends, family and loved ones will be crucial.

In both cases, it’s important to make decisions and organise quickly as there can be greater penalties the closer you are to the date of the wedding.

Here’s a handy step by step guide or checklist to a wedding postponement or cancellation :

  • If you have wedding insurance check the policy and contact the insurer as soon as you can to check your level of cover. This may help in your discussions with the venue and other suppliers.
  • Make a list of your wedding suppliers (if you don’t already have this in place) include all suppliers such as the venue of the Ceremony and Wedding Reception. If someone is helping you make sure that they have full access.
  • Check your wedding supplier contracts and bear in mind that most deposits are non-refundable. In most cases contact the venue first, especially if you are trying to organise a new date. Contact all suppliers negotiating timings and assessing their flexibility. It’s important not to ignore this or ‘bury your head’ in the sand as some suppliers may take action if they’re not informed.
  • Where required put everything in writing.
  • If formal invitations or ‘Save the Dates’ have been sent out then inform all your guests. A phone call or a printed card is best but if this really isn’t feasible then emailing or a text will do the job. Do make sure they’ve responded to be sure they have the new arrangements.
  • If you are cancelling completely it’s polite to offer to return your wedding gifts.
  • Check what your travel insurance covers if you have arranged a honeymoon and contact the insurer as soon as you are able. Contact your airline and hotel as most are being flexible as things stand.

The Perfect Wedding Colour Palette

Finding the perfect wedding colour palette or colour combination for your wedding is the key to much of your wedding planning so it’s important to do this as soon as you can. Wedding colour trends change from year to year but there are some favourites that never go out of style.

Look online for wedding colour scheme ideas and create a mood board or Pinterest board to gather your ideas. You will be guided not only by your favourite colours but often the style of the wedding, the time of year and the seasons.

For example, spring can provide your wedding scheme colour inspiration with either bright yellows or use pastel colour wedding ideas like pale pinks and whites of apple blossom. You can take your wedding colour inspiration from blousy summer flowers of every hue, the rich browns and golds for an autumn wedding colour palette or the icy whites and greys of winter.

Colour schemes for beach weddings can follow the golden yellow sands combined with the blues and greens of the oceans and garden colour schemes can incorporate the greens of foliage as a base teamed with your favourite flowers.

Inspiration can evolve from the venue itself if the venue has a colour detail that can’t be avoided. For example, if the Ceremony room has a mauve carpet you might want to avoid a colour clash and work this into your overall colour scheme for the day.

It’s also possible for the colour scheme to evolve through the day with the wedding reception colour scheme being a variation of the one for the wedding itself. For example, the colours may be slightly richer for the reception but still within the scheme itself.

Your colour palette can also be dictated by a place of birth, religion or country with Indian weddings providing the most vibrant, sumptuous colours. Colour schemes for Indian weddings can range from fuchsia and saffron, through black and gold to jewel colour palettes with topaz, jade, purple and magenta.

Most wedding colour schemes look at which three colours look best together. These colours can be complementary or contrasting and it can be a good idea to use a colour wheel as guidance.

These ideas on how to pick a colour scheme are not exhaustive but are perhaps the most popular methods for choosing a colour scheme. Once you have your scheme for example, a pastel wedding scheme it makes any further decisions much easier like a colour match for the wedding ties, bow ties, bridesmaids dresses and choosing your wedding flowers.

Most Wedding Schemes Use Three Colours

Summer Garden Wedding Colour Scheme

Most colour schemes consist of three colours. The main focus colour which is then enhanced with two others.

Matching Your Wedding Invitations to the Wedding Colour Theme

Once you have your scheme you can look at the wedding invitation ideas and designs. Whether you plan to have your wedding stationery made for you by a wedding stationer or you plan your own DIY wedding invitation ideas start by matching colours for the wedding and the style of the invitation. Most wedding stationers offer a colour match service and will advise you on all the available options for wedding invitation designs & ideas.

Digitally printed wedding stationery can often be colour matched to your theme and handmade wedding invitations, by their nature, can be made to your theme or scheme for the big day. Wedding colours can be incorporated into the design by using a specific ribbon colour, paper and card shade or envelope liner.

If you’re looking for specific colour matches Pantone guides can help.

Neutrals are very versatile and ivory and champagne is one that we love being luxurious yet romantic. With stunning champagne wedding dresses in the colour scheme, romantic ivory flowers and stationery with matching envelopes is a real head-turner. Handmade wedding invitation ideas can incorporate luxurious champagne coloured satin ribbons, champagne glitter card and glitter lined envelopes. Save the date cards can use the same materials as the wedding invitation card with the ‘on the day stationery’ also matching the theme.

When Making Your Own Wedding Invitations Make Sure That You Have Enough Craft Materials

Make sure that you have enough craft materials for making your wedding stationery.
Make sure that you purchase more craft supplies than you think you need, it will be more economical in the long run!

If you plan to DIY then when making your wedding invitations ensure you have enough materials before you start. Take into account that paper and card (especially those that are handmade) like wallpaper can vary in shade so make sure that you have enough. Likewise, make sure that you have enough for mistakes (sadly they do happen) and also plan ahead for ‘extra’ invitations. There may be guests that were mistakenly missed off your list or you may find that if someone can’t attend that you can invite someone else. Ordering enough plus spares is often more economical in the long run and secures all the materials that you need.

Most importantly enjoy your wedding planning, ultimately having sorted your colour palette will mean that all your decisions will be much easier.

Brides who design their own DIY wedding invitations often, having enjoyed the design process, become a wedding stationer. It can be daunting becoming a small business owner. Here are some tips and tricks we’ve learned over the years.

Wedding Stationer - Products Services and Portfolio

When we started over 20 years ago, there were only a few who had set up as a online wedding stationer. Social media didn’t exist, and stationery design software was fundamental and expensive.

Now it’s easy to build a website and market on social media there are many more who are set up as an online wedding stationer, through their own website, Etsy or Facebook.

Wedding stationery trends fluctuate year on year, but it can help to focus your invitation business in one area. You might concentrate on calligraphy, handmade invites or price, i.e.’ high end’ or ‘cheaper’ invitations. Bespoke wedding invitations inevitably take more time, and it’s crucial to cost them correctly.

The designs themselves should reflect what you love. It’s hard going if you don’t like what you produce!

It’s essential to build a stationery design portfolio that showcases your work in the best way possible. The quality of the photography is critical, so polish your skills or enlist the services of a professional.

Wedding Stationer - Business Branding and Names

Small business branding should be cohesive across all your platforms to define your brand. Your brand identity should span your online presence so that you’re easily recognised. If you’re unsure, it’s worthwhile consulting an experienced graphic designer for logos and branding.

Deciding on a name for your wedding stationery business can be a fun process. Make sure the business name reflects the stationery you design, but most of all be creative with it.

Wedding Stationer - Equipment and Software

The amount of equipment, materials and the type of software will vary according to how you wish to run your business. If you plan to outsource your print, then you need very little other than design software and a computer. Hand-finished wedding invitations will require a larger workspace and some storage for materials. Do your research if you plan to print yourself and get the right digital printer.

Selling Your Wedding Stationery

As there’s fierce competition amongst wedding businesses, it’s vital to build your brand through marketing. There’s lots of information for this freely available online, and it’s crucial to acquaint yourself with all the available channels.

Wedding fairs are invaluable for reaching clients. It’s also important to network with other local wedding suppliers. Team up with a local wedding venue to get listed on their supplier’s list. Ensure clients recommend you to friends and family as ‘word of mouth’ is the best marketing of all.

Ask your clients for reviews, listen to feedback and use it to develop your services. Deal with negative feedback professionally and use it as a positive for your business moving forward.

Wedding Invitation & Stationery Supplies

If you designed your own wedding invitations, then it’s likely you’ve already done a lot of DIY wedding stationery supplies research. Check online for suppliers that offer wholesale craft supplies or trade accounts as this can make a difference to your costs.

Most importantly choose your card making supplies and your supplier carefully. You will rely on your suppliers, so it’s critical to work with those that are reliable and trustworthy.

Equally, cheap wedding stationery supplies are not always the best.

Don’t ask other stationers for recommendations unless you know them well. It can take lots of hard work to find the best wedding stationery supplies.

Craft Supplies and Managing Stock

If you’re a wedding stationer making handmade stationery, then managing your stock can be critical to your success.

Unless you’re making bespoke invitations then limit the materials you use to those that are readily available.

Paper and card can vary in shade as much of the process is done by hand including colours. Recycled Kraft card, in particular, is very variable and shades can vary considerably.

Imperfections in handmade papers are part of their charm so always highlight this to your customer.

Budget products don’t necessarily mean inferior but are often prone to more variation in shade.

Always buy more than you need. Clients have the habit of asking for ‘one more’, and if your supplier is OOS, you’ll run into difficulties.

Dealing with Clients

Have a good, clearly written contract between your business and the client and take a deposit on booking. Specific issues regarding wedding stationery:

  • Make sure that the client proof-reads all text, especially the wedding invitation wording and names of the guests. Mistakes can be costly, and it’s vital to be clear who has responsibility
  • Ordering additional invites; Be open about this as costs can escalate after an initial print run if you outsource your print. For handmade invitations you may have used all your allocated stock and ordering additional supplies can incur a substantial additional fee. Worst-case scenario your supplier is now out of stock of the items you need. Factor in the cost of your time, as it’s a drain on time making a small number.
  • Ensure that it’s clear what your procedure is if a booking is cancelled or postponed.

Dealing effectively with clients is a crucial part of a wedding stationery business

Advantages and Disadvantages

Always allow more time than you think you need, especially in the beginning. Don’t expect substantial financial rewards, expect a lot of hard work and time commitment but oodles of job satisfaction.

We are so delighted to showcase the work of Amy MacQuarrie, another wedding supplier who has agreed to take part in our ‘Stationer Spotlight’ feature on wowvow

Amy MacQuarrie

Amy runs ‘A Moment of Magic’ located in Bolton – we know you’ll enjoy her inspiring story!

wowvow: Tell us a little about the journey you made to launching your business.

Amy: I started my business, I think it was around 2014, when it came to my own wedding stationery! I’d always made cards/invitations for family members and so decided to create my own after receiving some really bad customer service from another company who I wanted to use. It shouldn’t be like that for your wedding! So I started to design and create my own, and my friend asked me to do hers too as she was getting married the day before myself, and then I kind of had a light bulb moment and thought why can’t I do it for others too … and I’ve never looked back!

wowvow: What were some of your biggest challenges in starting your business?

Amy: My biggest challenge was time! I had a full time job at a debt company in accounts and finding the time to do everything I wanted to do was so stressful. I would be sitting at my desk with no work to do, thinking about all the things I could be doing at home. Needless to say after a few years I had gained enough custom to finally take the plunge and I have now worked from home for over 2 years.

wowvow: What advice would you give to any stationery designers setting up?

Amy: I think the advice I would give is just always give it your all, and don’t be disheartened when you don’t get 50 million likes on your social media etc. because that can set your mind back miles, and never compare yourself to anyone! You are the best at what you do in your own right. Another thing I PRIDE myself on and think it’s THE most important thing, is ALWAYS use the best materials. I only ever use or create something I would want to receive myself, and materials are the biggest thing for me!

wowvow: How do you differentiate yourself from other wedding suppliers?

Amy: This year it’s so hard to differentiate yourself style wise, particularly for invitations there’s SO many of the same style knocking about, but of course your materials and the way you make things needs to be BETTER than anyone! I would say for me, I like to try and create different styles and not just your ordinary, and I like to think that I offer more of a ‘friend’ approach to people. Your wedding day is SO important and it’s not about business, I like to think that I become really close to my couples, and just make them feel at ease and they put their trust in me

wowvow: What is your favourite craft tool?

Amy: My fave craft tool has got to be my guillotine. Boring I know, but I use it every day, it’s SO perfect in what it does, and I literally would be lost without it!

wowvow: What’s your favourite wowvow product

Amy: Fave WOWVOW product, which I think everyone would guess, is GLITTER CARD (although it’s not my husband’s fave when he’s got it all over his face constantly and hoovering it up off the floor). My most used is Silver & Champagne Supernova! I literally base my work around these haha!

wowvow: Why do you like to shop with wowvow?

Amy: I’ve shopped with WOWVOW now for at a guess 4 years? Customer Service is THE BEST, and I’m always on the phone to Wendy (I bet she dreads hearing it’s me) asking her advice and she’s always amazing, and the products are just amazing, quality, speedy postage and feed my Moam addiction!

wowvow: What is your favourite wedding design trend at the moment?

Amy: You know I honestly don’t think I have one, because I see so many different things that I love on a daily basis, and there are some things that just never get old and will always be classic! It’s all about the way you present it!

wowvow: Where do you take your inspiration from?

Amy: There are so many different amazing companies out there, and are all different in their own right, but I think my biggest inspo comes from my couples! I do so many consultations and they basically create their own invitation. I just let them loose playing around with the materials to make something they like, and then I put my own twist on things and make something which is completely different!

wowvow: Who is your design hero?

Amy: I honestly don’t have a design hero as there are so many designers out there that do completely different things that I love, but of course anybody who uses anything sparkly and pretty catches my magpie eye!

wowvow: What else do you like to do when you’re not designing or creating?

Amy: When I’m not working I spend most of my time with my sister and my little niece who is 16 months old! She’s such a character and is my biggest WHY to make sure I do well in business so I can spend the time with her and spoil her rotten. Other than that me and Kieran LOVE going walking and finding new places to eat! We are SUCH foodies I’d hate to think how much money we spend on eating out!

wowvow: What is your proudest personal and/or professional accomplishment over the last year?

Amy: Proudest personal accomplishment is finally being able to buy our own house. Me and Kieran are both self-employed so it’s been a real struggle to get a mortgage but we have finally just had an offer accepted on the most amazing house!

Proudest business accomplishment would be being able to buy THE PRINTER OF DREAMS! In March this year I invested in an Oki Printer which you would typically have in a warehouse! It arrived to my little apartment in the attic on an Artic lorry, 18 stone heavy with the packaging and took 4 of us to get it up 3 flights of stairs! The print quality is out of this world, and being able to afford something like this is just an amazing feeling for such a small business!

wowvow: What do you imagine you’d be doing if you didn’t have your business?

Amy: If I didn’t have my business, I think, job wise, I’d still be working in the accounts sector, and nowhere near as happy as I am now! I’d definitely have more time to myself and less stress (haha) but I just love making people happy, so everything is so worth it!

wowvow: What is the best gift you’ve ever received?

Amy: Huge toss up between being taken to Paris & Brussels for my birthday or my Jimmy Choo trainers which I LIVE in!

wowvow: What are your pet hates?

Amy: Pet hate is ignorance and bragging! Everyone just needs to be kind and happy 🙂

wowvow: What was the last photograph you took with your phone?

Amy: Last photograph was of my Gin 🙂 I’m currently sat in the middle of the ocean somewhere on Independence of the Seas!* Which is why I FINALLY have the time to do this Q&A (*Amy is now back home and hard at work!)

wowvow: What is your personal mantra?

Amy: Positive thinking and always know you’re blessed! I’ve only started really practicing this and reading happy quotes etc. in the last 6 months, and as barmy as it seems, it’s really helped me and worked! The opportunities it’s brought for me and just the pure happiness is crazy, and I truly believe it’s because I’ve changed my outlook on life!

wowvow: How does your day start?…

Amy: Make my ‘to do’ list, Coffee & ‘Cheers’ (TV program) on the couch, and then press on for the day!

wowvow: What are you reading at the moment?

Amy: At the moment I’m reading a book that was recommended on BBC Radio Manchester called ‘The Woman in the Window’ I’ll let you know how I get on!

wowvow: What are you currently watching on TV/Netflix?

Amy: What am I NOT watching! I’m really obsessed and I’ve literally run out of things to watch on Netflix! I always have something in the background while I’m working.

wowvow: What piece of your wardrobe best represents your style?

Amy: My Black Jeans!!! I live in them and everyone always makes a comment when I’m actually out of them or wearing some colour, but I always have a bit of something sparkly on whether it be my sparkly gold Jimmy’s’ or my Guess trainers with the sparkly toes.

wowvow: Tell us something we don’t already know about you!

Amy: I’m a Neighbours geek. This is probably the most interesting thing about me, I’m so boring Dr Karl Kennedy sent me and Kieran a video message for our Wedding Day arranged by my sister!

wowvow: What are you going to do next?

Amy: Next in terms of business I want to try and create a lot more designs, but finding the time is so hard! I’d love to do a complete new range which hopefully this year I will get round to! And personally, never go out again! We will be living off super noodles now until we have our house haha!
